Position title: WASH Engineer Assistant

Reporting to: Senior WASH Officer

Location: Baidoa,Somalia

Job summary:

The WASH Engineer Assistant Will support for the implementation of SOS WASH activities under Kaafia+II project locations. Under the supervision of the WASH Senior Officer, the WASH engineer Assistant will contribute to the planning, design, and execution of WASH activities, ensuring they meet technical standards and effectively address the needs of the community in the entire project locations. The role of WASH engineer assistant involves site assessments, technical drawings, materials management, developing POQs of all wash constructions and coordinating with local communities to improve access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene practices.

Job Responsibilities:

Main duties and Responsibilities:

• Supervise construction activities, ensuring adherence to project plans, design specifications, and quality standards under the direct supervision and leadership of the WASH Senior Officer.

• Collaborate with project teams to develop WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) project plans, considering construction requirements and specifications.

• Prepare technical designs and drawings, Bill of Quantities/cost estimation, and tender documents, supervising all WASH infrastructure projects, including the pipeline extension in the IDPs camps.

• Oversee the handover of SOS’ KAAFIA PLUSII PROJECT-provided infrastructure to end-users.

• Organize training sessions for end-users on the operation and maintenance of infrastructure installed by SOS’ KAAFIA PLUSII PROJECT.

• Conduct inspections and quality control checks to ensure that construction works meet the required standards and specifications.

• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and promote sustainable construction practices.

• Communicate project progress, challenges, and achievements to stakeholders through regular reports, meetings, and presentations.

• Work closely with all key stakeholders, including government authorities, community leaders, beneficiaries, partner organizations, and other providers.

• Ensure timely and efficient monitoring and evaluation of project activities.

• Contribute to the development of water and sanitation schemes, including overseeing the design and implementation of piping systems for providing water to IDPs in Baidoa.

• Supervise pipeline extension work and any other related tasks as required to ensure project success.

• Very good understanding of national WASH policies and strategies, program and stakeholders in Somalia

• Good knowledge of WASH SPHERE standards in emergencies

• Assist in field assessments, baseline studies, and periodic studies to identify areas needing new water sources and sanitation facilities in Puntland regions.

• Maintain accurate and up-to-date project documentation, including construction plans, progress reports, and technical specifications.

• Assist in the preparation of project completion reports, including lessons learned and recommendations for future projects.

This position operates under the direct supervision and leadership of the WASH Senior Officer

Skills and qualifications
Job competencies:

Essential

✓ Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Water Engineering, Hydraulics, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.

✓ Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in construction supervision, particularly in WASH projects.

✓ Technical Knowledge of water supply systems, sanitation infrastructure, and relevant construction practices.

✓ Proven experience in project management, including planning, execution, and monitoring.

✓ Strong technical skills in designing and implementing water and sanitation systems.

✓ Familiarity with environmental regulations and sustainable construction practices.

✓ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder engagement.

✓ Ability to work collaboratively in a team and manage multiple tasks efficiently.

✓ Proficiency in relevant software for design and project management (e.g., AutoCAD, ArchCAD, GIS and MS Project).

✓ Willingness to travel to project sites and conduct field assessments.

✓ Problem solving skills
