ABOUT HURDO
The Humanitarian Umbrella for Relief and Development Organization (HURDO) is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit, and non-political organization established in 2014 to ensure sustainable and build up inclusive social development and to protect human rights, saving and improving lives, building resilience, and creating lasting solutions for the most vulnerable, poorest, and marginalized families affected by poverty and natural disasters. HURDO was established to address the insistent needs of marginalized communities in the south-central zone of Somalia. Our Main objective is to empower individuals and communities through holistic development initiatives, focusing on the fundamental resources that can help breaking the cycle of poverty and create lasting positive change in the community.
To this end, HURDO:
· Empowers individuals and families to achieve food security and improve their livelihoods and addressing food insecurity and poverty in underserved communities.
· Improves access to quality healthcare services for underserved population and addressing healthcare disparities, promote preventive care, and enhance overall health outcomes in communities.
· Provides access to quality education for children from marginalized communities and to empower learners, educators, and communities, fostering lifelong learning, critical thinking, and socio-economic development.
· Promotes gender equality and empower women by addressing gender-based discrimination, promoting women’s rights, protection and providing support services to survivors of gender-based violence.
· Provides help to effected people by the Natural calamities and to alleviate suffering, restore dignity, and rebuild lives in the aftermath of disasters.
· Realizes stability, reconciliation, and sustainable peace in societies affected by conflict and elevating all dimensions of conflict and building long-term resilience within societies.
· Improves access to and the quality of essential services related to water supply, sanitation facilities, hygiene practices and promoting sustainable development through effective WASH interventions.
JOB SUMMARY
The role of Community Protection Volunteers in HURDO Protection program in Banadir aims to contribute to:
Improved understanding of local context and specific protection risks in their community.
Increased HURDO’s ability to respond to rapid contextual changes that may instigate an increase of or exposure to new protection risks.
Enhanced community understanding of HURDO Protection program and – as relevant – other HURDO Sector Programming, general HURDO intervention mandate, and activities.
Ensured referral of individuals.
To prevent or mitigate the occurrence or consequences of protection incidents, meaning survivors or individuals at imminent risk of rights violations.
With protection risks requiring individual, systematic, and multi-sectoral support.
In need of specialized assistance.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Support Protection teams in community engagement.
By liaising with targeted communities, for example in arranging safe and appropriate locations for activities.
By sharing information about the objectives of HURDO Protection programming in general and specifically related to Protection Monitoring, Individual Protection Assistance, Case Management, and Legal Assistance.
2. Support Protection teams by actively highlighting contextual changes.
· Facilitating safe and timely protection awareness-raising sessions through home visits, group discussions and public gatherings.
· By following up on rumors, speculations, or other informal communication methods used to share information within communities or locations.
3. Support Protection teams in identifying individuals in need.
· Practicing safe referral practices to refer individuals included in HURDO Banadir Protection Risk and Vulnerability criteria to the Protection teams.
· Practicing safe referral practices to refer individuals requiring specialized support to the Referral Officer.
· Collaborating with other community volunteers, such as community health volunteers and village committees, and facilitating distributions when needed.
4. Support Protection Information Dissemination activities by highlighting specific legal needs of individuals, and trends or practices to guide outreach messaging.
· Including support in conducting outreach sessions, and as possible conducting them independently based on request and need.
· Disseminating Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials in local languages, and ensuring they are easily accessible to women and girls
· Develop strong relationships with individuals and groups within the community, fostering trust and open communication channels and observe and report any potential threats, hazards, or safety concerns within the community, such as crime, domestic violence, or safety infractions.
· Support in translation between HURDO staff and members of the community, as relevant and needed.
· Actively engage with the appointed Protection Team Focal Point for coordination, collaboration, coaching, and guidance. This includes supporting other sector teams, such as, Economic Recovery, and Community Safety.
Skills and Qualifications
· Minimum level of literacy and knowledge of either English language.
· Committed and interested in helping and connecting their community to HURDO services.
· Committed to maintaining confidentiality.
· Respectful of others, regardless of their differences.
· Willing to learn new approaches to rights enhancement, community engagement, and protection.
